Above the Clouds — Mount Dimats

"Above the Clouds — Mount Dimats" is a journey for those who want to see Armenia from a different side: not only ancient monasteries and famous landmarks, but real mountains, off-road tracks and the panoramas of northern Armenia.

The main point of our route is Mount Dimats, in the Tavush Province not far from Dilijan.

Part of the way is covered in off-road vehicles, because ordinary tourist transport cannot make the climb.

As we ascend, the forest landscapes of Dilijan stay below us, and ever wider views of the surrounding mountains and valleys open up ahead.

The road to Dimats itself becomes part of the adventure: mountain switchbacks, off-road stretches, forests, open spaces and constantly changing scenery.

At the summit and the panoramic viewpoints there is time to walk, rest and take photographs.

In clear weather there are impressive views over the mountain ranges of Tavush. And when the clouds sink below the summit, Dimats takes on a completely different mood — it feels as if you are literally above the clouds.

After the mountain adventure we head to Old Dilijan.

The historic part of the town has kept the atmosphere of old mountain Dilijan, with traditional houses, wooden balconies, small workshops and its distinctive architecture.

Here you can stroll along the old street, rest a little after the jeep tour and see a quieter side of Dilijan.

The final stop of the journey is Lake Sevan.

Sevan lies at about 1,900 metres above sea level and is one of Armenia's main natural attractions.

After an intense trip into the mountains, there is time here to stop by the water, relax and enjoy the panorama of the lake and the mountains around it.

In a single day the route brings together completely different experiences of northern Armenia — the jeep adventure on Dimats, the atmosphere of Old Dilijan and the open space of high-altitude Sevan.

"Above the Clouds — Mount Dimats" is not a classic bus excursion but a route with a genuine adventure component.

It suits those who love mountains, off-road driving, nature, panoramic views and unusual places far from the standard tourist trails.

The tour is especially interesting for travellers who have already seen Armenia's classic landmarks and want a completely different experience.

The jeep tour to Dimats depends on weather and road conditions, so here the mountains themselves become part of the adventure.

In one day — Dimats, Old Dilijan and Sevan: from mountain roads and clouds to the calm waters of one of Armenia's symbols.

The jeep tour to Mount Dimats

The main adventure part of the route is the climb up Mount Dimats in off-road vehicles.

Part of the road runs through mountain terrain and off-road sections. There may be uneven stretches, climbs, descents and shaking while the vehicle is moving.

This is a normal part of the jeep tour format.

On the mountain there is time to walk, rest and take photographs at the panoramic viewpoints.

Weather and access to Dimats

The trip up Mount Dimats depends directly on weather and road conditions.

Rain, thick fog, snow or a deterioration of the dirt road can make some sections of the route unsafe for off-road vehicles.

In such cases the guide and the driver may adjust the route, or the highest point of the ascent, for safety reasons.

Weather in the mountains can change much faster than in Yerevan or Dilijan.

What we recommend bringing with you

  • Comfortable closed shoes with non-slip soles
  • A sweater or something warm
  • A windbreaker
  • A hat
  • Sun protection
  • A small snack

Even in summer it can be cool and windy at altitude, so we strongly recommend bringing something warm. Bottled water is provided by Amaras Tour.

Who should take the jeep format into account

Off-road driving involves shaking and abrupt changes in the road surface.

If you do not travel well on mountain roads or get carsick, we recommend taking this into account when choosing an excursion.

The tour also involves walking on natural mountain terrain, so comfortable footwear is especially important.

Lake Sevan

Sevan lies high in the mountains, so even after a warm day on Dimats it can be cool and windy by the lake.

We recommend not leaving warm clothes in the main vehicle and keeping them with you during the trip.

Meals

Lunch is not included in the tour price and is paid for separately.

There is time for rest and meals along the route. Since a significant part of the day is spent in the mountains, we recommend bringing a small, convenient snack with you.

Duration of the excursion

The tour lasts about 10–11 hours.

The actual time of return to Yerevan may vary slightly depending on the condition of the mountain road, the weather, the pace of the group and the length of the stops.

The order in which Dimats, Old Dilijan and Sevan are visited may change for organisational reasons or because of weather conditions, without any change to the main programme of the tour.
