Jeep Tour to Trchkan Waterfall

"Jeep Tour to Trchkan Waterfall" is a journey for those who want to spend a day among the mountains, canyons and wild nature of northern Armenia. The main goal of the route is Trchkan Waterfall, one of the most impressive natural waterfalls in Armenia. But this is not simply a trip to a single landmark. Part of the route is covered in off-road vehicles along mountain roads, so the drive itself becomes part of the adventure.
From Yerevan we set off towards the northern mountain regions of the country. As we move away from the capital the landscape gradually changes: open mountain expanses, deep gorges and almost untouched nature appear. Then the off-road part of our journey begins.
We transfer into off-road vehicles and continue along a natural mountain road towards the waterfall. Here the usual sightseeing route ends and a genuine little adventure begins. Dirt roads, rocky stretches, mountain scenery and stops at beautiful natural spots make the road to Trchkan a separate part of the journey.
The main point of the route is Trchkan Waterfall, located on the Chichkhan River. The water falls from a height of more than 20 metres, forming a powerful stream among the cliffs and the green gorge. Trchkan looks especially impressive during the high-water season, when the flow becomes considerably stronger. The name of the waterfall is linked to the word "to jump": according to local tradition, trout moving upstream tried to leap over the waterfall. Today Trchkan is considered one of the well-known natural landmarks of northern Armenia.
After arrival there will be time for a walk, a rest and photographs. There is no urban infrastructure here and none of the usual atmosphere of crowded tourist sites. All around are cliffs, the river, mountain air and the sound of the waterfall. Depending on the condition of the road and the weather, the off-road vehicles drive to the furthest accessible point, after which part of the way to the waterfall is covered on foot. The walking section runs across natural terrain, so comfortable shoes are essential here.
Stops at beautiful natural spots are planned during the jeep route. The main idea of this journey is not to rush from one landmark to another, but to spend the day among the real nature of northern Armenia. After resting at Trchkan we return in the off-road vehicles and head back to Yerevan.
"Jeep Tour to Trchkan Waterfall" suits lovers of nature, off-road driving, mountain scenery and active recreation. No special mountaineering training is required, but you must be ready for mountain off-road conditions and a walk over natural terrain. The route is especially interesting for those who want to see Armenia beyond the classic tourist destinations. The accessibility of individual sections depends on the weather and the condition of the mountain road. This is a day where nature itself is the main thing: mountains, off-road trails and one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Armenia — Trchkan.

How the jeep tour works
After the main part of the drive the group transfers into off-road vehicles and continues the journey along the mountain road towards Trchkan Waterfall.
The jeep route runs over natural terrain. There may be dirt and rocky stretches, climbs, descents, puddles and shaking while driving.
This is a full part of the adventure, so the trip differs from an ordinary coach excursion.
Depending on the weather and the condition of the road, the off-road vehicles drive to the furthest accessible and safe point.
The walking part of the route
Part of the way near the waterfall is covered on foot, across natural terrain.
No special mountaineering training is required, but participants should be ready for a little physical activity.
Here you may encounter:
- Uneven paths
- Stones
- Wet patches
- Slippery surfaces
- Small climbs and descents
You need to be especially careful right next to the water.
What footwear you need
The right footwear is especially important on this route.
The stones near the waterfall can be wet and very slippery.
If you wish, you can bring a spare pair of shoes or socks, especially after rainy weather.
We recommend:
- Trekking shoes
- Closed trainers with good non-slip soles
Not recommended: flip-flops, open sandals, dress shoes and shoes with smooth soles.
What to wear
It is best to choose comfortable sports or outdoor clothing for the trip.
Near the waterfall it can feel cooler because of the water, the wind and the spray.
We recommend dressing in layers:
- A T-shirt
- Comfortable trousers
- A warm jumper or fleece
- A windbreaker or light waterproof jacket
- A hat
Even in summer we recommend bringing a light windbreaker.
What to bring with you
We recommend bringing a small, comfortable backpack:
- Closed non-slip shoes
- A windbreaker or raincoat
- A warm jumper
- A hat
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Spare socks
- A spare T-shirt if you wish
- A personal snack
- Personal medication
- Wet and dry wipes
- A power bank for your phone
Bottled water is provided by Amaras Tour.
At the waterfall
We do not recommend going too close to the edges of the cliffs or standing on wet stones for a photograph.
After rain the water level and the force of the flow can increase, and the paths become more slippery.
Please follow the mountain guide's instructions and do not leave the group on your own on difficult sections.
Meals
A full lunch is not included in the price of the tour.
During the journey there is time for a rest and a meal, depending on the programme of the day.
As the tour lasts about 11–12 hours, we recommend bringing a small personal snack.
Water and a treat from Amaras Tour are included in the price.
Weather
The weather in the mountain part of the route can change quickly.
Rain, wind, fog and a drop in temperature are possible.
After heavy rainfall the condition of the dirt road and of the approaches to the waterfall may change.
In unfavourable conditions the mountain guide and the driver may change the approach point or an individual section of the route.
The safety of the group is always the priority.
Who this tour suits
The tour suits travellers who love nature, jeep trips and active recreation.
No special physical or mountaineering training is required.
However, you should take into account:
- Driving off-road
- Shaking during the jeep section
- A short walk on foot
- Uneven natural terrain
- Wet and slippery spots near the waterfall
If you suffer badly from motion sickness on mountain roads, we recommend taking this into account before booking.
Duration of the tour
The total duration of the tour is about 11–12 hours.
The actual time of return to Yerevan may vary slightly depending on traffic, the weather, the condition of the off-road section and the length of the stops.
In unfavourable weather conditions the order of the programme or the furthest accessible approach point to the waterfall may be changed, without changing the main concept of the tour.
